The word "Oro" means GOLD in spanish. George Pusch arrived in this area around 1870 importing the first Steam pump for ground water. The Eastside of the Cataina Mountains is respectfully named Pusch Ridge.
Oro Valley has seen substantial growth in the last 10 years as the popluation approaches 38,380 residents. Oro Valley, Arizona is known for it’s strict police enforcement and careful planning in order to preserve the area’s sonoran desert environment.
The largest residential development is called Rancho Vistoso which consists of several small neighborhoods combined to form one large subdivision. Rancho Vistoso consists of a few retirement communities: Del Webb’s Sun City Vistoso, Spendido, and Vistoso Village (22 percent of the population is 65 years and over). There are several other communities that meander through the many golf courses. Canada Hills subdivision meaders through the El Conquistador Country Club & golf course. Rancho Vistoso meanders through the Vistoso Ridge Country Club. Execlusive gated communities like Stone Canyon and Honey Bee Ridge meander through Stone Canyon Country Club.
The town has a master plan for a new Town Site called "Naranja Town Site" and will feature 212 acres of parks, athletic facilities, and a community center.
Oro Valley is a very active community with hiking and biking trails can be found in several of the residential communities.
